Big Idea: Chemical reactions occur over time, and different factors (temp., pressure, concentration) affect how fast or slow they occur.

1. Study for quiz 5 minutes. 5 minutes of review (10 min.)
2. Quiz #13 Review of Chemistry. (20 min.)
3. Day 2 of Silver nitrate experiment (10 min.)

Check homework for Monday, be sure to do it.

Monday, Jan. 5th, 2009: Reaction Rates

Big Idea: Chemical reactions occur over time, and different factors (temp., pressure, concentration) affect how fast or slow they occur.

1. Warm-up: mass of reactant/product problem.

3. Review demo from previous Friday: Alka-selzer in hot and cold water.
4. Demo: Silver nitrate and copper: observing reaction rates.
5. Short lab: silver nitrate reaction and worksheet
6. Homework and review of main ideas.

Homework: 1. complete most of the CST sheet, type it up, correct it from last time. Due Wednesday.
2. Study for quiz tomorrow.
3. QP analysis and sources of error due Wednesday.

Friday, Dec. 19th: Santa Shows Up

Friday: Last day on gas laws, demo of reaction rates, relax and have fun for a few minutes!

1. Warm-up: Combined Gas law problem. Solutions problem. Review.
2. Make sure students understand the homework packet for the break.
3. Practice with all the equations. (Make and switch.)
4. Demo of reaction rates
5. Relax and enjoy time with the students.
6. Quiz on the Tuesday after we get back from break. Study over the break, specific homework to study.

Homework: 2 pages of review material, double-sided. Due on Monday after break.

Thursday, Dec. 18th: More Gas Law Practice

Thursday: More practice and intro to reaction rates.

1. Warm-up: Charles’ and Boyle’s Law problems.
2. More practice; introduce combined gas law problems.
3. Practice on Combined Gas Law problems (worksheet), due at end of period.
4. Collect Packet #7.
5. Introduce reaction rates: Demonstration with Alka Seltzer
6. Go over homework packet for the break.

Homework packet: finish parts of CST worksheet that we have covered! Do all problems, try not to use the cheat sheet. Study all notes.

Wednesday, Dec. 17th: Practice with the Gas Laws

Big idea: the pressure, volume, and temperature of a gas are related in clear mathematical ways. Can you calculate one, given the other two?

1. Warm-up: Go over quiz problems, correct them.
2. Finish Notes #17: The Gas Laws
3. Practice Charles’s Law on board.
4. Practice Boyle’s Law on the board.
5. Worksheets, rest of problems for homework, DUE TOMORROW.
